Horde Mode

THE CHAOS ONSLAUGHT – CAN YOU FACE THE HORDE ON NOVEMBER 4TH?

Horde mode is an opportunity for a team of players to team up to fight a horde of enemy units who are controlled using an ‘AI’ principle.

It is still the Warhammer 40K you know and love at heart. You still pick an army list with a detachment, but instead of competing 1v1 for VP using primary and secondary missions, you must co-operate with your fellow players in a deathmatch with the horde. Your mission is simply to survive (and try and fulfil your secret mission)!

The number of players determines the size of the battle so we can have up to 8 players. This means that army sizes are not the normal 1000/2000pts. So it is important for you to let us know if you want to play in advance so we can work out how many people will be playing and how many points everyone gets for their Army list.

Each round, the horde will spawn new units at random in their spawn/deployment zones and the players will draw secondary missions (specific to this mode) and misery cards (buffs to the horde or nerfs to the players). The horde always goes first and it is controlled by a neutral player (i.e. a DM) and they must attack the player according to a fixed set of rules. (Available in the Core Rules you can download). Each faction in the horde possesses its own unique ‘faction rule’ giving those units some unexpected buffs.

Players take their turn together and attempt to kill off the horde, while succeeding in their secondary missions. You can also gain (and spend) supply points, to gain advantages (such as Memelord Forts, Artillery barrages or even reinforcement units!).

At the end of the round, you see if you passed or failed your secondary missions and what the consequences will be. After five rounds, the game is over and the players reveal their own personal secret mission and we find out who the winners are or maybe the horde prevail and no-one is left to find out…

On the 4th November, we will be playing a Chaos Onslaught, the Chaos Gods have united to attack the Materium with overwhelming force. The factions in the horde will be Chaos Daemons, Chaos Knights, Chaos Space Marines, Thousand Sons, Death Guard, Emperor’s Children and World Eaters. If you have any units (which appear in a 10th Edition codex)[1], you could lend the horde for the evening please let us know, we would be incredibly grateful!

If you want to join us, then please let us know. All you need is a 10th edition Warhammer 40K army which is not Chaos.[2] Your list can include any unit with a current, valid 40K datasheet (including Legends) but only units appearing in your 10th edition codex will be eligible to be reinforcements.[3] You can check which units can be used as reinforcements by looking at the Spawn tables which will be published here soon. If your main army is Chaos then still let us know and we can see if you can borrow another army for the night.

Please let us know if you are intending to come along by Saturday 1st November, either on Facebook or by emailing matt@ludlowwargamingsociety.co.uk. We need to plan the Horde army and the points totals ahead of time. This is simply because we won’t have enough time to actually play the game on the night if we have to work it out then. Help us minimise working out points and maximise glorious destruction time.

Once you have let us know, please check back on Sunday 2nd November, when the army points totals will be released so you can plan your army.

If you have played Horde mode before, please note that we are using modified rules and a new set of spawn tables which incorporate the Codex and points changes since August 2024. So there will be some changes, but the vast majority of the carnage remains the same!

[1] The Spawn tables for the Horde are based on the units in the current Codices (and Chaos Daemons Index) excluding the Chaos Knight Forge World units.

[2] Horde mode battles are large and chaotic with both sides fielding multiple factions. To keep some order, the same faction cannot appear for both the Players and the Horde.

[3] Excluding Forge World units, if in doubt check the spawn table for your faction.
